What If You Are Waitlisted?

How to Appeal a Decision

You DID it!  Congratulations for successfully completing your college application process!  I know it's a long, long journey for everyone, and you can be proud of all the hard work it took to get you here at the end of the road!  College is such an extraordinary opportunity to learn about the world and to learn about yourself.  I wish you all the luck in the world as you head off to this next exciting phase in your life!

1.   Look in the mail or in your e-mail inbox for information from your college about housing, roommate(s), orientation, course selection, etc. Respond promptly to all requests from the college. Do this even if you are waitlisted at a college you would prefer, or are appealing a rejection.  One student I know ended up staying in a hotel room off-campus her freshman year because she ignored the housing signup request! (The pool was nice, though..)

2.   Be sure to send your final transcript to your college at the end of the year.  Here is the link to the Common Application's Final Report Form, which you print out and give to your high school counselor to send with a final transcript. If you are attending a non-Common App college, look in their admissions packet for instructions about how to submit your final grades.

3Send your AP scores if the AP policy of your college will award you credit (look online or in admissions packet for this information).

4.  Ease the transition into college. Accept the fact that you'll be in charge of your academic and personal life. What you do, when you do it and how things get done will be up to you. You'll have new responsibilities and challenges. Think about budgeting your time and establishing priorities. Take charge of the changes that lie ahead and eliminate or minimize pressures. Go forth with confidence and enthusiasm, willingness to adapt and determination to succeed academically and personally.  Read more Tips for College Freshmen, and check out what Harvard students have to say about how to find College Happiness.
